HST Challenge - Block Eight - Spinning Pinwheels

Posted by Liz K. on 4/4/2015
Hey quilters! Block #8 in the HST Challenge is here!

For those who may be joining us tardy (don't worry, easy to catch up!):

Spinning Pinwheels

Super fun block!! Anyone else finding they're getting better at HST-making as we go along? Normally I have to trim my block a little somewhere, but this week, it didn't need it!

First, as always, you're going to need to make your 16 HSTs (see tutorial link above). Here's the layout of the block:

Here are your two-HST components:

Make 4 of each

And here's the quarter-block, made up of those two components, that will comprise all 4 quadrants of your block:

Make 4 of this block

Now lay out your 4 blocks into the Spinning Pinwheels layout:

You'll have a pinwheel in the center!

Now join them together into your finished block!

Here're my 8 blocks so far on my "design wall"!

If you don't have a design wall, but you do have a 60" x 72" space on your wall, this thing (it's a Fons & Porter felt design wall that just hangs on any wall) is totally awesome! My blocks have been "stuck" on the design wall for weeks now! No budging.

I'll update here with pictures as they come in. You can send me pictures of your block(s) at [email protected]! :D

Sent 2 new blocks in. The first one looked small so did another one with scraps, it came out about right. The first one was off about 1/2 inch.I suspect I did all my seams a hair off.I think ill take it apart and try again. I love that print.

I love these patterns. I will use them with jelly rolls and your great tutorial for the HST, BUT I have recalculated the strip widths so i can produce a finished 12 inch block to use for our guild's round robin block swap! You just need to cut the strips 3 and 5/8' wide. Love this site!

Thank you for this challenge! I look forward to every weeks new pattern. It sure is helping me improve my accuracy in those seams and helping me nest each row. Thanks again!
