HST Challenge - Block 14 - Independence Pinwheel

Posted by Liz K. on 5/15/2015
**First, I want to apologize for how behind I am on getting all of your pictures updated! Our house was BURGLARIZED on May 5th! I have been totally preoccupied dealing with police, cleaning up our house, dealing with our insurance (thank goodness for it!), getting a new security system and a new door - if it's ever happened to you, then you know! It took about 10 days to snap out of it - I felt totally back to normal yesterday. So sorry about being so behind!

They didn't steal my sewing machine or any of my quilt blocks - that's all that really matters!!! :D By the way - if you are looking for car or home insurance, Progressive has been just wonderful!

Block 14, here we come!

For those who may be joining us tardy (don't worry, easy to catch up!):

Block 14, Independence Pinwheel

This one reminds me of the pinwheel on a stick you see at the 4th of July parade! Let's get right to it!!

First, as always, you're going to need to make your 16 HSTs (see tutorial link above). Here's the layout of the block:

Here are your two-HST components:

Make 4 of each

And here's the quarter block, made up of those two components, that will comprise all 4 quadrants of your block:

Make 4 of this block

Now lay out your 4 blocks into the Independence Pinwheel layout (I sewed my top and bottom together before I took the picture!):

You'll have a pinwheel in the center!

Now join them together into your finished block!

And here're my 14 blocks so far on my "design wall"!

If you don't have a design wall, but you do have a 60" x 72" space on your wall, this thing (it's a Fons & Porter felt design wall that just hangs on any wall) is totally awesome!

Awaiting pictures of your block at [email protected]!

Just want to say I'm so sorry about the burglary of your house. I haven't experienced that personally, but my son has. It's horrible. I hope you didn't lose irreplaceable family things. I live in fear of that. Barbara

Liz, Your HST Challenge has changed my Saturdays. That was my day for sleeping late. Now, I hop out of bed early so that I can be ready to start sewing the minute your instructions are posted. I even changed the day I service my Featherweight from Saturday to Friday so that the machine will be ready to sew. Thanks for starting the HST Challenge! It is such fun!

I'm so darn sorry Liz...yes...I've been robbed a few times...and no part of it is pretty...I struggle because both times it happened while I slept...so tough... Sending you best wishes...and biggest of hugs... Trude

Fran so glad you're having fun with it! Trude, oh no, can't imagine it happening twice (and we weren't home). That's just awful!! (Hugs!) Barbara - thank goodness, they left my grandmother's china intact (although all over the floor!!) Since we just moved last year, lots of stuff is still in boxes in the garage that they didn't get to. :D All in all, it could have been much worse. I feel horribly sorry for anyone this happens to who doesn't have any insurance, it's made all the difference! We were part of a string of burglaries, and one of the burglars is in custody - caught in the act after the last one. So that is also comforting! Thanks much for your concern, ladies!

I know how it is to have a home burglarized, unfortunately. The most valuable thing the guy stole was my sense of security. The fortunate thing was, that a year afterward I discovered that it was indeed the neighbor I thought it was who robbed my apartment. I contacted the police and he was arrested and served time in jail. He had to pay me restitution, and I got back a ring he had stolen. His wife was wearing it one day, and that is how I found out. I still have security issues, but not as bad as they once were. I'm glad to hear that you are getting back to normal. This weekend, I am planning on FINALLY getting my Challenge squares started. I have some sewing finished, but have to cut the HSTs and get ready to make the squares. Thanks for all of your inspiration, Liz!

Liz, I am so sorry to hear of the invasion into your private world. I pray that God will bring peace to you and allow you to recover quickly, both emotionally and financially. Your patterns and emails have blessed my life tremendously. I don't have time to quilt as often as I would like, but I retain a file of your wonderful patterns and little by little, enjoy being able to learn to become a better quilter. Please know what a blessing you have been to my life! Carolyn

Liz, so very sorry to hear about your home invasion. I can't imagine recovering from that. Scary to know that our private lives are so vulnerable to the evils of others. God's peace to you and your family. Hope they catch the culprits. Thank you for your hard work in helping all of us (and me, who is still new at this). I love it but have so far to go. I can't imagine how very busy you are planning, coordinating and supplying us with joy! God bless...Sarah
Bonnie Sproul Date 5/16/2015
I'm so sorry Liz! I didn't want to say anything when no pics were coming up. Everyone has things that come up weather personal or family related that need to be taken care of. I'm just glad you are OK.
Wendy Date 5/16/2015
It is sad that people find it easier to TAKE than get a job. Our society has gone over the edge. Hope your recovery from all this a speedy one.
Arleen Date 5/16/2015
That is such sad news about the burglary - I'm so sorry you had/have to go thru an invasion of your home. Yet, I'm so impressed how you pick up and carry on!! May God grant you peace.
SueJean Date 5/17/2015

I am truly sorry to hear that your home was burglarized ! Such a violation! We live way out in the country on our farm in the middle of nowhere and I always fear that as no one would see a burglar if we were out of town. I'm happy we have 5 big dogs :) I hope and Pray you won't ever have to experience that again. Sincerely, Peggy C

I KNOW you feel so violated when something like that happens to you. I had an experience like that before and that's how I felt, It took me a long time to feel secure again. I hope you'll recuperate much sooner. May G'd be with you through this awful time in your life. A loyal customer. Evita

I'm so sorry to hear about your house be burglarized. I know it's not fun going through something like that. I too have been through it back in 1980 something. Just living on my own and well you know. It's not good when you walk into your house and you know something is wrong. You feel it. My prayer are with you. As the man upstairs say He will not put nothing on you that you can't handle. Take care Teresa
M Storms (Stormy Fields) Date 5/22/2015
My gosh sorry to hear about your breakin. It's got to be a terrible feeling knowing that your personal space was violated by vandals. Glad to hear that no one was hurt in the process. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Liz and your family.
Rebecca Johnstone Date 7/5/2015
The directions were so easy to follow. I had a good time putting this quilt together. Can't wait to make another one. I hope these patterns will remain on your web site. I would love to submit a picture of my quilt, but don't know how.
