2016 HST Challenge Week 25 - Final Instructions!

Posted by Liz K. on 6/25/2016
This week we're making the 25th block from last year's challenge here and assembling the quilt top!

Important links:

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT

For those of you who did last year's challenge, this year's is a little easier - at least getting the sashing ready, anyway! (If you've made 25 blocks instead of 49, click through the link below and follow last year's instructions!)

1. Take 10 of your white strips, still folded in quarters right out of the roll, and cut the strip into 10" - one slice near the fold, and one before the selvage and other fold. You'll have an easy stack of 4 10" pieces from each folded strip.

2. Using 20 white strips, sew together 10 pairs of strips on the short end to make long strips.

Here are last year's instructions for assembly! Check the picture showing the long sashing strip and the short sashing strip sections if you can't visualize the rest of these instructions.

To assemble the top:

- 42 blocks will get the short sashing strips sewn to their right sides (then trim sashing strip down to fit - your blocks are about 9.75")

- 6 blocks at a time will be attached into 7 rows, with the 7th block in each row attached to the end (no short sashing strip on that one).

- All 7 rows get a long sashing strip attached to their bottoms

- All 7 rows are attached to each other and finished with a long sashing strip on top.

- Add the long sashing strips to each side and your top is complete!

I have made copies of all your HST challenge blocks. So I hope to make all the blocks within the next 6 months so I can send u a pic.

I have enjoyed making all 49 blocks. I'm up to date with the blocks but, it will take me a few weeks to put all together. I may have to make a few more blocks as I want this to fit on a western king bed. I am also planning on putting in posts at the corners of each block in the sashing so will need to cut the sashing a bit differently. Thanks for your inspiration and all those patterns.

Thanks for the easy way to cut the sashing. Now why didn't I think of that! Liz, I have so enjoyed your HST Challenges. You are the greatest!

Liz, Thank you for another great project. I'm still working on mine, so far behind, but I have all the block instructions. It may be a while before I assemble my quilt. My husband passed away in March so I'm figuring out my new life, but it will include quilting.

Will these be on this site for a while? I am behind. Has anyone set the blocks on point?

I have the blocks complete. However, I had decided during the first 25 blocks that I wanted to double the size so I chose to make 2 of the first set. So my quilt will be the same size but the blocks will be doubles. I hope to some day do the second set of blocks Was fun to see the MANY ways these blocks were put together.

Absolutely beautiful! Great job Teresa!
Wendy Date 7/9/2016
I don't understand stand why some of my blocks are an inch bigger than the others. Cut all the same way
Janice Date 7/9/2016
Kim setting on point sounds like a great idea. I just need to get the blocks finished.

Hi Liz, I am still working on my 2016 blocks plus to add the 2015 blocks. At first, I wanted to learn the block names, but as I got behind, I began to compete with myself to get the 2016 blocks done. I have had interruptions, but hope to complete within the next few months. I plan to send pics of the completed top piece. Thanks for the challenge, I have really enjoyed it. And, I like Teresa quilt, which the colors showed the different 2015/2016 blocks.

Wendy, I had the same thing happen last year and stopped making them. I finally figured out that I hadn't been consistent with my seam allowance!
Teresa Date 7/9/2016
This has been great fun and enjoyed it a lot. I have learn to be patient when working with HST. When everything is done at the shop maybe someday we can do another one. Thanks again Liz for both of the challenge.
Shari Targgart Date 7/12/2016
I am still working on the HST blocks, but am having a little trouble when the seams want to meet up in the same direction. So I decided to start ironing the seams open so they can lay flatter. Blocks seem to go together easier. Am doing a quilt room house cleaning at the moment. Will go back to the HST blocks shortly. Teresa's quilt is absolutely beautiful.
Shelia Date 8/18/2016
Hi, I just started making the HST blocks using your method. I have a couple blocks that are a lot bigger than the rest. Am I not cutting them correctly? What size should the block be? How big is the finished quilt with the 49 blocks? I'm using 49 different 1930's reproduction fabrics.
Liz K. Date 8/18/2016
Hi Shelia, I'm betting that for some you cut your triangles correctly and others you didn't - that would result a set of triangles being a bit larger. LK

I just found this site and extremely excited about the challenges......Can't wait to see what 2017 is going to be????????

I just discovered this website also, and excited to see what the 2017 challenge is going to be. Very interested. How much does the kit cost for the challenge?
Linda Graham Date 11/26/2016
I have never made a quilt before but think I can do this with these great instructions. While the materials are on sale, what do I need to buy? Thanks!
